New Summer Camps Build Important STEAM Skills in Templeton, CA

Digital Dragon is bringing its technology programs to the Paso Robles area for the first time. Owner Laurie Kantor Finn says, “Most kids know how to consume digital media. We like to flip that around and teach them how to create video games, apps, and digital art in an engaging, hands-on atmosphere.”

According to education leaders, STEAM exposure is becoming increasingly essential to a child’s well-rounded development. Sal Khan, Founder of Khan Academy, states, “To prepare humanity for the next 100 years, we need more of our children to learn computer programming skills, regardless of their future profession.” Opportunities in STEAM fields are expanding as technology continues to evolve. According to a report called “STEM Jobs: 2017 Update” published by the US Department of Commerce, careers in this sector are growing more rapidly than jobs in other areas of employment (24.4 percent versus 4.0 percent). http://www.esa.doc.gov/reports/stem-jobs-2017-update

Kantor Finn adds, “Our summer camp philosophy is that kids should have fun, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pick up practical skills along the way. In an ever-changing high-tech world, we’re giving campers the ideas and tools they need to be the creators of the future.”

The week-long camps, which begin July 9th, will explore subjects like coding, 2D game design, and app development, along with the very popular Minecraft. Children will be separated into two age groups: Grades 1st – 5th and Grades 6th – 8th. All camps will be held on the Templeton Middle School campus.
